Zehra Bai Kassamali Moledina Manji, born on January 3, 1930, in Zanzibar to Rajabali bhai Jaffer and Fatmabai Peera, stands as an unsung figure from the history. Hailing from the small town of Lindi in South-Eastern Tanzania, Zehra Bai's life mirrors an unwavering dedication to family and principles, marked by remarkable contributions that have left an enduring impact on the lives of numerous individuals. Zehra Bai, one of seven siblings, including Gulamhusseinbhai Rajabali Jaffer, Nargisbai Pyarali Dewji, Ramzanbhai Rajabali Jaffer, Jafferbhai Rajabali Jaffer, Hassanbhai Jaffer, Rukiyakhatoonbai Haiderali Teja, and Hassanbhai R Jaffer, who is the sole surviving brother presently residing in Canada.
Her life exemplifies the resilience of ordinary individuals committed to their beliefs, navigating through various life stages. In 1947 at the age of 18, Zehra Bai not only embraced the role of a wife to Kassamalibhai Moledina Manji but also took on the responsibilities of a loving mother to three children: Layla Merali currently in Dar es Salaam, Mohammed Manji currently in Toronto, and Mehboob Manji currently in Sydney.
In the quiet corners of Lindi, where stories are exchanged through whispered anecdotes, the weaving of this collective narrative draws upon the experiences of numerous individuals who were privileged to have crossed paths with Zehra Bai. Many fondly recount the echoes of her commitment to Qurankhwani (Darsa) in the Imambargha during the Holy month of Ramadhan. Punctuality and systematic organization were virtues close to her heart, as she ensured her presence for the session promptly after completing her Namaaz and Iftar at home.
Taking on the role of the Jamaat committee secretary, she seamlessly blended the responsibilities of community service with the joy she found in the art of sewing. Her skills became a source of happiness for many, especially those less fortunate, as she generously designed and stitched clothes without charge, bringing smiles to countless faces. Juggling the demands of raising three young children, her ambition for self-improvement drove her to delve into the study of English.
Leading a life of simplicity, she consistently sought ways to elevate the well-being of others. Her dedication and compassion served as a wellspring of inspiration to all who crossed her path. Fond memories linger of her selflessly teaching the Holy Qur’an to young girls and guiding older women in the community through Duas. Her calm and patient demeanour, coupled with an unwavering determination, approached every task prudently.
This chosen path was not merely a chance; it was influenced by the blessing of being born into a family deeply dedicated to serving the Ahlulbayt (‘A). Marriage further enriched her commitment as she joined a family steadfast in spreading the profound message of Imam Hussain (‘A) to others, making her journey interwoven with the inspiration to serve.
A woman of simple elegance and remarkable dynamism, Zehra Bai Manji embodied courage, tenacity, and unwavering character. Pioneering a significant change, she became the first lady to introduce Urdu majalis on the ladies' side in Lindi, where the traditional recitations were conducted in Kutchi, reflecting the local culture. Zehra Bai, recognizing the essence of Azadaari, understood the importance of diversifying recitations to maintain the remembrance of Imam Husain’s (’A) martyrdom and our perpetual responsibilities towards the religion and humanity.
Her tireless efforts extended to awakening the community's conscience through Husain Day programs. Zehra Bai went beyond, mirroring the spirit of Bibi Zainab (SA), by sending handwritten invitations to neighboring Jamaats in Tanzania. Her aim was not only to echo Imam Husain’s (‘A) profound sacrifice in all areas but also to forge stronger bonds among the communities.
Zehra Bai's influence extended to the younger generation, where she delivered insightful lectures and provided them training to recite nawha and marsiya. In every aspect of her endeavours, she infused the atmosphere with a unique rationale, creating a legacy that resonated with dedication, passion, and a deep love for the remembrance of Imam Husain (‘A) the Martyrs of Karbala.
Zehra Bai embraced the opportunity to advocate for social causes and contribute to the well-being of widows within her community. Quietly, she supported various charitable initiatives, offering whatever support she could to enhance the lives of others.
Furthermore, she played a pivotal role in advancing women's education, actively inspiring numerous young women of her time to pursue further qualifications in nearby cities. Recognizing the limited opportunities in Lindi after completing O-level exams, Zehra Bai became a driving force in motivating and guiding many women towards considering careers in teaching. Many individuals attribute their success in this field to her influence, as she provided a platform for women to explore diverse professions, thereby reshaping the educational landscape for women in the small town of Lindi through her forward-thinking approach.
On August 8, 1980, Zehra Bai Kassamali Moledina Manji departed this transient world, leaving a legacy of selfless service. Her humility and unwavering dedication serve as beacon of inspiration to all whose lives she touched.
